I was absolutely delighted to be selected as the Conservative prospective MP for Dagenham and Rainham. It's time for change in Dagenham and Rainham. I was born in Barking and brought up in Chadwell Heath. I know and love this area.
I have been a Conservative my whole life. My parents are my inspiration. My mother was born and grew up in the East End of London and my father in Goodmayes. Their childhoods and education were disrupted by the Blitz and they experienced hardship and tragedy early on in life, but they also learned the value of family and community ties and were aspirational and hardworking.
My parents abandoned a Labour Party which rejected the aspirations of working people and they became Margaret Thatcher's original voters. They gave me their values: hard work, self reliance and responsibility to our communities. They were so proud when I went from Chadwell Primary, on to grammar school in Woodford and became the first member of my family to go to university when I won a place to read Modern History at Downing College, Cambridge.
After graduating, I enjoyed a successful career in international banking and business in the City, before eventually leaving work to bring up our son with the same values my parents had given to me. I have also sought to honour those values by serving my local community to the best of my ability, as a councillor and magistrate.
I have a deep affection for and affinity with Dagenham and Rainham. I am not a career politician. My background means that I can relate to local people's concerns and aspirations as they juggle family and work commitments, want their communities to be safe, attractive places to live and for their own children to have a good education, healthcare, job prospects and decent housing.
For me, this was a very special homecoming.
Due to the sheer volume of requests to various campaigns I am afraid I am unable to provide individual responses at this time. Thank you, however, for taking the time to send me information and I am sure that I will be engaging and supporting many of the issues and campaigns raised in the future.
